Free Vision Screening
Thank you to Nicole for this great info...
Free Vision Screening Detects Leading Causes of Childhood Blindness
Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation to Hold Free Vision Screening at the
Saint Louis Science Center, Saturday, November 14th
St. Louis, Mo. (September 14, 2009) – Amblyopia or “lazy eye,” is the leading cause of blindness in children, but is easily treatable – especially when identified early in one’s life. However, only 15 percent of preschoolers ever undergo an eye exam, simply because they display no outward symptoms or do not have the ability to verbalize their vision problems to their parents. Let undetected, amblyopia can have a negative effect on a child’s ability to learn.
To help children see a brighter future ahead, the Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation invites families from across the metropolitan area to a free Amblyopia Vision Screening for children ages 6 months to 6 years at the Saint Louis Science Center on Saturday, November 14, 2009 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The first 125 children screened will receive a $5 promo card good toward a $25 purchase at Build-A-Bear Workshop®. For more information, please call the Foundation at 800-283-1982, ext. 115.
Screening for amblyopia takes just minutes and is completely non-invasive. Trained Foundation staff technicians use a hand-held scanner to screen a child’s eyes for a variety of vision problems. The automated system reviews the results and will immediately produce a pass or refer report. If a child shows symptoms of amblyopia, parents are encouraged to take him or her to an eye doctor for a follow-up eye examination.
Amblyopia occurs when the brain ignores information sent from one eye. Eventually the weak eye will cease functioning properly, and the stronger of the two eyes will take over, leading to vision problems. The condition can occur either because of a focusing problem where one eye is more nearsighted, farsighted or astigmatic than the other, or because of a misalignment of the eyes where one or both eyes cross in or turn out.
Since 1995, the Foundation’s Amblyopia Vision Screening program has screened more than 100,000 Missouri children, including thousands in the St. Louis area. Screenings are offered free to preschools, daycare centers and community organizations as well as the families they serve. Organizations who wish to schedule a screening may do so by calling the Foundation at 800-753-2265, ext. 8518.
The Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation based out of Columbia, Mo. The Foundation is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of sight through its vision programs including: Amblyopia Prevention Screening, Glaucoma Detection Screening, Eyeglass Recycling, Eye Care Assistance, the Heartland Lions Eye Banks and the support of ocular research. Casa de Cheapskate: Family Fun Night "DINOSAURS"

Friday night we enjoyed another FAMILY FUN NIGHT. We did it DINO-style.

Here's what we did...
Cooked our Tyson dino nuggets. Steamed some broccoli 'trees'. Then propped them up between the dinosaurs. I tinted their cups of milk w/ blue+green food coloring & called it, 'dinosaur blood'.
Our collection of dinosaurs made the table setting & atmosphere.
After our supper, we learned a new dinosaur song:
I'm a Mean Old Dinosaur
(Author Unknown)
(Sung to tune of "I'm a little Tea Pot")
I'm a mean ol' Dinosaur
(Make a mean face)
Big and Tall
(Gesture hands big and tall)
Here is my tail, here is my claw.
(Gesture hands behind your back for tail and make claw hands)
When I get all hungry
(Rub your tummy)
I just growl
(have the kids exaggerate their grrrowl)
Look out kids I'm on the prowl.
(I tickle each of my kiddos' tummies)
After a dinosaur hunt, for all the dinosaur books in our collection, we ended our quiet evening with some story stories & facts.
How you could up this ante:
- Dress the part. You could go dino or caveman.
- Get some vines (crepe paper) & hang from ceiling or your dining room light.
- Make a volcano. Small scale or go crazy with it.
- Dinosaur shaped cookies.
- Dino bone dig. Just get a small container (I like using the under the bed storage units) & fill with sand. Put any type of little bones (or anything resembling one) in the sand & have your little paleontologists dig them up. You could even add brushes, magnifying glasses, or any other 'archaeological' devices.
- If you're good with breakfast for dinner (one of my favorites), there is a great instant oatmeal with dinosaur eggs.
Hope your FAMILY FUN NIGHT is dino'tastic!

Because I'm a little short on time these days, I won't do a clever method of choosing the winner. I'm just going to do random integer generator. Because I did a somewhat confusing link to the original post on another post, I will honor those folks' entries & tag them onto the end of the original post's comments. In other words, Jen C., Jennica, Windi, & Marie, you guys are #s 52, 53, 54, & 55.
I will post the winner this evening...
fingers crossed!
